Learning to forgive our child – and ourselves

However much we may try, it’s not always easy to maintain a HEART-centred connection with our child: life has a habit of getting in the way. We can all lose our temper in a way we later regret, and we can all find ourselves giving in to a child’s relentless demands at the end of a long day of doing our utmost to maintain firm boundaries. That’s why cultivating forgiveness is so important – both for yourself and for your child.

The ‘frenemy’ in our head is often very reluctant to let us forgive ourselves. But we can perhaps find a moment to show ourselves some compassion. Ask if you can forgive yourself for:

● Losing my temper

● Not saying the right thing

● Resenting my child

● Feeling like a failure

● Comparing myself unfavourably to others

One friend of mine who looks after her children full-time said that at times it can be a lonely and thankless task being a parent; she has accepted that her husband, her own parents and her children will probably never express the kind of appreciation that deep down she would love. Instead, she tries as often as she can to tell herself, ‘You’re doing really well.’ She has recognized and accepted the need to be her own cheerleader. If I were to be granted ten seconds to offer one message to each of the mums and dads I work with, it would be this: even the smallest steps you can take towards being kinder to yourself matter far more than you might imagine.
